6:42 PM.

Arcana sighed deeply as she lied back on the plush couch in the living room of her flat. Her sunset-golden hair sprawled out around her in a silken mess, as did her long, off-white skirt. Today hadn't been the best day ever.

Stanze wasn't home yet, apparently she had gone back to Ed's hotel with him after their training session. That was fine and all, but Arc would have been a whole lot more comfortable if Stanze had called or something, instead of leaving the poor girl to figure it out by herself.

Not to mention, Arc was feeling a bit uneasy already. There were rumors buzzing around the Library that the military was starting another war in the East, and that the Fruher was sending the Alchemists in with the first wave of soldiers. Now, the Lt. Col. had told her that she wasn't going to be shipped off, since she pretty much ran Central Library in his absence, but there was only so much a corrupt Lieutenant Colonel could do!

Slowly, Arcana's jade-green eyes closed and she drifted off into a restless sleep, or rather, straight into and unsettling dream.

Sand... There was sand everywhere, warm, golden sand that gave the dreaming child a false sense of security. I'm at the beach, she thought. But then, all of the sudden, a strong gust of wind knocked her off her feet, and her brown sandals went flying away in the breeze. Arcana landed hard on the ground.

Then, out of nowhere, Arc began to hear voices. They were faint at first, but when they grew to an audible volume, Arcana could tell that they weren't voices she wanted to be hearing.

Men, women, children... The voices of the dead. Tears welled up in her eyes and she looked away from the vast blue sky, her head turning down toward the ground. But then she realized... that's where they were coming from. Arc picked up a grain of sand and, instead of seeing it sparkle in the blaring sunlight, she was a face. She screamed.

And sat straight up.

8:57 PM.

The sky, which had been a rosy shade of orange when Arcana had lied down, was now dark and overshadowing. The silvery orb that hung far off in the distance seemed to be a great eye, that knew everything, saw everything. Quickly, Arcana closed her eyes and turned away from the window and curled up on the sofa, too frightened to look out of it.

"What's wrong with me?" She moaned feebly.

A huge slam echoed though the house as Stanze stormed in, shaking with anger and fear. "I cant believe this is happening!" She shouted as she dropped down into one of Arc's chairs unceremoniously. "Ed says that were could be shipped off any day now!" She continued, eyes wide and blurry. Thousands of things were clouding her mind as she buried her face in her hands feeling the metal against her cheek. "I know you're not going... I figured at least, but what if something happens to Ed?!" Stanze exclaimed, her head whipping up to meet the gaze of her close friend. Nothing good could come of this ordeal but maybe Arc could calm her down and reassure her.

The slam woke her up instantly, not to mention it scared the shit out of her! Arcana turned quickly to see her best friend storm in, her expression somewhat of a mix between anxiety and rage. "St-stanze?" She asked, almost unsure if it was actually her. This wasn't the sort of mood Stanze came home in, let alone one that Arc had ever seen.

"I cant believe this is happening!" Arc sat up straight, shifting in her seat a bit, while fixing her skirt. "Ed says that were could be shipped off any day now!" Now, a sickening twisty... mushy sort of feeling began to grow in Arcana's stomache and her throat went almost completely dry. So they were right... It was happening.

Her shoulders fell and her head drooped down. I didn't want to believe it... How could they be so stupid? Arc brought her hand up and held her forehead. "You've got to be kidding me." She looked up, however when she noted the distress and horrifyingly obvious... feeling in Stanze's words. Her heart suddenly filled with a bittersweet sympathy for her. Arc stood up and walked over to the girl that lied crumpled in the chair and wrapped her arms around her, "It's alright..."

"I wish I could believe that..." She whispered into Arcana's shoulder as it pressed against her in a way that she had always a mothers might have. "I've never thought about death before... Like it's something you only hear about. Now that it's staring me in the face I don't know what to do!" She cried helplessly, abandoning all prior thoughts of keeping together and showing no fear.

"Well.... At least you're not going!" Stanze commented, trying to make things as bright as possible. The picture of Arcana on a battle field was just to difficult to picture. She was far to gentle a creature. "Umm... I'll... Make something... Anything you want in particular?" She continued, wiping her eyes and clearing her throat. In a rather characteristic manner, despite her upset stomach and hollow feeling, Stanze tried to change the subject off of herself and this whole war thing completely.

"Uhm... No... I'm not all that hungry." She smiled feebly, "Not feeling too good." it was true, she hadn't been feeling very hot, even before the dream, but it had just gotten worse when Stanze told her that sickening news. Uneasily, Arcana stood up and brushed her skirt off. How far the mighty have fallen... the young State Alchemist thought bitterly. Wait... State Alchemist? Ed was a State Alcehmist... Did that mean she had to go, too?

More then anything, at that moment, Arcana wanted to scream. Scream in hopes that something, or someone would reassure her that they'd never send someone like her into a warzone. But her voice was caught in her throat.

Limply, Arc fell back onto the couch, her sparkling green eyes grew dull and tears formed silently behind them, slowly dripping down her pale cheeks.

Feeling slightly disappointed (she had already taken her apron out of the kitchen and was about to tie it around her waist) Stanze stared at the floor as she had gotten into the habit of doing since it was really the only thing that didn’t remind her of anything. Absentmindedly she twirled the thin white string around her metal finger and thought earnestly about how strange this all must be for Arc. Her lips parted in an attempt to speak but as her head raised and she caught a glimpse of her fallen friend and they shut tightly. “Arc… What-“ Stanze was cut off by her own conscience as she approached the small woman who appeared to be crying silently.

Why was it that even in someone’s time of need even the most devoted of friends felt useless and unable to comfort? It was true that the young girl had never had much experience with this kind of thing but it took all of her strength just not to start crying herself let alone console another. “Why do people have to be so STUPID?!” She yelled while kicking the sturdy couch with her foot and ignoring the sharp pain in her toes that followed it. “I’m so SICK of this Military BULLSHIT!” She continued, her teeth clenched tightly together and her fists curled so close that her metallic fingers dug deeply into her hot palm causing a small amount of blood to issue from in between them.
